Why Do I Need a Retinal Specialist?

A retinal specialist is an ophthalmologist (an Eye MD). An ophthalmologist is a physician who is educated, trained, and licensed to provide diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. A retinal specialist (vitreoretinal surgeon) has completed an additional 2 years of advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of the retina and vitreous.

The retina, macula and vitreous are subject to a number of disorders which may require care by a retinal specialist. Your family physician, primary eye care doctor or other specialist may refer you to retinal specialists for a consultation. This consultation includes a review of your medical history and current problem. When visiting any retinal specialist, be sure to take all of your pertinent medical records for the physician to review. It is also important to include detailed lists of medications and allergies.

If you have been referred by your family physician or other source, a detailed report will usually be forwarded. In other cases, your doctor may request that we provide complete management of your condition. In either event, you will be asked to return to your original doctor's care for continuing treatment as needed. We will remain available for future consultations.
